Product Care

Instructions for care of Utility Items

Wood is a hardy and resilient material. Items handcrafted from wood will last for years with the right love and care. The following tips will help ensure that your items remain in good condition. Feel free to get in touch should you ever need advice.

Cleaning

  • Wipe clean with a warm, damp cloth after use.

  • If necessary, hand wash in warm soapy water and rinse off.

  • Dry thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth and leave to air before storing away.

  • Avoid leaving wooden items to soak or wash them with a dishwasher. This will significantly weaken the wood and can damage your product.

  • Avoid storing in direct sunlight, as this may lead to warping and/or cracking.

Re-oiling

Wood will eventually start to dry out. To keep the wood well conditioned, periodically re-oil with a food safe finish. The frequency of oiling will depend on the frequency of use; if the wood starts to lose vibrancy of colour then it is a good indication that

re-oiling is necessary.

Apply oil generously using a paper towel or soft cloth. Leave for approximately half an hour, reapplying more oil if necessary, to allow the oil to absorb into the wood.

Buff off any excess oil with a clean paper towel or soft cloth as required.

Recommended food-safe oils:

  • Mineral Oil

  • Ricebran Oil

  • Walnut Oil

  • Beeswax

After prolonged use, you may find that the surface of your wooden product feels less smooth than when you first purchased it, because the fibres of the wood have become raised. The wooden surface can be easily restored by lightly sanding with 400 grit sandpaper, then re-oiling.
